An opportunity is now available within the finance team at Wellington Shire Council for a qualified and experienced Management Accountant.

Reporting to the Team Leader Accountants, this position will offer you the opportunity to contribute to the day-to-day operation of the finance department and deliver specialist accounting services to the organisation as well as to improve your financial skills within Local Government.

Working along with a team of Management Accountants, you will be responsible for ensuring that Council’s financial system, reporting for operations, capital works and assets are accounted for in accordance with relevant accounting standards and other applicable legislation. In addition, you will work with various stakeholders across the organisation, supporting them with analysis of budgets vs actuals, financial reporting, forecasting and cost accounting.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Support senior management and the organisation to develop accurate and timely budgets and expenditure forecasting.
  • Participate in the month-end close process, manage general ledger reconciliations, P&L and balance sheet ensuring accruals, prepayments, and ensure other journals are posted correctly.
  • Oversee financial analysis to support decision making.
  • Support internal and external year end audits.
  • Provide finance support for projects within the relevant business units as required, including the development of finance reporting systems.
  • Variance analysis, highlighting risks and opportunities within the organisation.
  • Identify areas where improvement is required, either from a performance or financial control perspective and recommend solutions for implementation.
  • Support and share the workload of the finance team, taking on such other tasks and responsibilities as may from time to time be allocated, including ad-hoc financial duties.

The ideal candidate for the role of Management Accountant would be an experienced CPA/CA qualified finance professional who will be expected to work under their own initiative as well as contributing to a high performing team.  

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate how they meet the criteria below: 

  • Tertiary qualification in business related discipline with CPA/CA designation or progress towards CPA/CA designation.
  • Substantial accounting experience including administration of financial systems preferably within the Local Government sector.
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment and to remain on track and focused in a regulated, driven environment.
  • An advanced level of proficiency in the use of Microsoft office Suite, in particular Excel.
  • Well-developed written communication skills, particularly in the area of financial reporting.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships and act with diplomacy and discretion when dealing with confidential information.
